The following bird’s eye view of the old city helps to orient some of the places in Jerusalem which are related to Golgotha. As can be seen in the picture, the Holy Sepulchre Church is on the west side of Jerusalem, while Golgotha is on the east side, northeast of the temple area. Even further northeast is the sacrificial place of the Red Heifer. The biblical history of the Temple Mount begins in B.C. when Abraham was instructed to offer his son Isaac, the inheritor of God’s promise, on Mt. Moriah (Genesis ). God provided a ram in the place of Isaac to signify the coming of the Messiah to make the .

The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut tomb in Jerusalem, which was unearthed in and is considered by some Protestants to be the site of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. The tomb has been dated by Israeli archaeologist Gabriel Barkay to the 8th–7th centuries BC. The re-use of old tombs was not an uncommon practice in ancient times, but this would contradict the biblical text that speaks of.

A curious old print of the city Golgotha book, full of vulgar triumph, reproduces a "Temple Bar, the City Golgotha," representing the Bar with three heads on the top of it, spiked on long iron rods.

The devil looks down in ribald triumph from above, and waves a rebel banner, on which, besides three coffins and a crown, is the motto, "A crown or a grave.".
